Cupra New Zealand is refocusing its pure-electric efforts on the Tavascan, which will be launched in the local market in October. It's a coupe-style SUV that's based on the same MEB platform and battery technology as the Volkswagen ID.4/5 and Skoda Enyaq, albeit with sportier aspirations.

It'll also likely be the only MEB passenger car on sale in NZ for a while; both the ID SUVs and Enyaq have been run out in their original guises, and are on hold until the launch of revised versions (VW says that won't be until 2026 for the ID.4/5).

The Cupra Born, the brand's first battery-electric model, has now been discontinued.

Two versions of the Chinese-built Tavascan will be available in NZ, the $89,900 V and $109,900 VZ. That means it crosses over at the top end of the similar-size Terramar (the V e-Hybrid is $87,900, the performance VZ $91,900)... and takes the brand upwards into more premium pricing territory.

Tavascan V features a rear-drive powertrain with 210kW. Range is up to 534km (WLTP). Tavascan VZ delivers 250kW through a dual-motor, all-wheel drive system, with a range of 499km.

The VZ also features Dynamic Chassis Control with sport suspension. This system continuously adjusts the suspension response in real time.

Both variants include adaptive cruise control, side assist with exit warning, and a rear and top-view 360-degree camera system. A 12-speaker Sennheiser sound system is fitted as standard.

While Tavascan doesn't officially arrive until October, a preview vehicle will be touring dealerships from 15 August.
