Greg Murphy probably needs no introduction… but this story requires one anyway, so here goes. He’s an ex-racing driver and ongoing motorsport legend: four Bathurst victories, including a “Lap of the Gods” qualifying record that stood for 15 years, and a driver synonymous with the history of the Pukekohe circuit.

These days Murphy is as busy as ever in a variety of roles, from road safety campaigner to presenter/speaker to Giltrap Group ambassador. He drives a Cupra Formentor VZ.
Know what you’re thinking: in his role with Giltrap, Murphy does have the use of a Group vehicle, but this isn’t it; he’s chosen to pay to lease the Cupra as his personal car.
Why this model and what do you like about it?
There’s something really unique about the Formentor; it’s not quite an SUV and it’s not quite a hatch. It sits in this sweet spot where it gives you the best of both worlds.

The design caught my attention first. It’s bold and different, not your typical lookalike SUV. Cupra’s done a great job creating a vehicle that stands out.
What’s your favourite thing about the car?
I’ve always appreciated vehicles that bring back the enjoyment of driving and the Formentor does just that. The design is aggressive but not over the top; it makes a statement without shouting.

I also love knowing what’s under the skin: the drivetrain comes from the Volkswagen Group family, so you know you’re getting quality and performance. It’s that combination of style and substance that really does it for me.
Anything you don’t like about it, or would change?
Honestly? No. It ticks all the boxes for me.
How well is the vehicle suited to your lifestyle?
Perfectly. The kids are either out of the house or independent now, so we don’t need a big family hauler. The Formentor is the ideal size for what we need, and my wife loves it.

My other vehicle is a Volkswagen Amarok, so between the two we’re well covered for anything.
What do you always have in your car?
Sunglasses – can’t go without them.
How long do you plan to keep it?
Indefinitely.
You win $10 million in Lotto this week, what car(s) are you buying?
I’d probably treat myself to an Aston Martin V12 Vantage. Just because.
