Prototype EV completes Earth-sized distance in just over seven days.

  • The Concept AMG GT XX covered 5479km in 24 hours, exceeding the previous EV record by 1500km.
  • Across eight days, two vehicles jointly completed 40,075km at an average 300km/h, proving long-distance endurance.
  • The prototype’s three axial-flux motors delivers over 1000 kW, supported by an 800V, liquid-cooled battery system.

Mercedes-AMG has put its latest electric tech demonstrator through the wringer, and the stopwatch barely kept up. The Concept AMG GT XX has blitzed a string of endurance records, including a staggering “eight-day world tour” completed in just 7 days, 13 hours, 24 minutes and 07 seconds.

Breaking records at 300km/h

Tested at the Nardo circuit in Italy, the GT XX racked up 5479 km in a single 24-hour stint, smashing the previous EV record by more than 1500 km.

Across the full challenge, the car averaged over 5300 km per day, pounding round the 12.68km track at a steady 300km/h.

Engineers chose that speed as the sweet spot between pace and charging efficiency, with pit stops seeing charge rates of around 850 kW, a figure that today’s public chargers can’t come close to.

Two cars ran in parallel, completing 3177 laps apiece. After more than a week of non-stop driving, they finished just 25km apart - barely two laps of the track. Ambient heat climbed past 35°C, yet the experimental drivetrain held firm.

Tech that talks the talk

Central to the GT XX are three axial flux motors, compact units with roughly three times the power density of a conventional EV motor. Together they deliver more than 1000kW, or over 1360hp. A new 800V, liquid-cooled battery design borrowed from Formula One technology ensured repeatable high-output bursts and ultra-fast charging. Mercedes claims five minutes on a prototype charger could add 400km of range.

Mercedes-AMG CTO Markus Schafer said the run was about “redefining the very standards of performance with groundbreaking technologies and innovations”.

Meanwhile, AMG boss Michael Schiebe stressed the takeaway for customers: “For our future electric models, this means they will get a genuine AMG - no ifs; no buts”.

F1 feel, but fully electric

Mercedes-AMG F1 driver George Russell also got a turn behind the wheel, remarking: “The axial flux motors respond as immediately and precisely as a Formula One drivetrain, but with an endurance that I have only ever experienced with combustion engines. This technology will revolutionise the driving experience – both on the racetrack and on the road”.

The records - 25 in total - may be the headlines, but the bigger story is AMG’s confidence that its next-gen electric architecture, AMG.EA, can blend blistering speed with marathon stamina. Production models using this technology are set to debut next year.
