- Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a Dolby Atmos-enabled in-car studio concept based on the Mercedes-Maybach.
- The system allows artists to mix and edit tracks directly from the rear cabin using the vehicle’s speakers.
- Developed with UMG and Dolby, the concept may evolve into a future series-production feature.
Mercedes-Benz has taken “luxury on wheels” to a literal new pitch. Its latest collaboration with Universal Music Group and Dolby Laboratories has birthed Crafted in a Mercedes, a concept that transforms the rear cabin of a Mercedes-Maybach into a Dolby Atmos-enabled sound studio.
Artists and producers can now plug in their laptops, tweak mixes and monitor tracks in motion, all while cocooned in Maybach comfort.
The brand’s in-car Dolby Atmos system offers studio-grade sound precision, allowing creators to adjust the car’s advanced speaker setup for fine-tuned mixing without stepping foot in a studio. Mercedes-Benz says it’s exploring production versions of the concept for future models.
The sound of innovation (literally)
The project builds on the 2022 Approved in a Mercedes-Benz initiative, which set a benchmark for in-car sound quality by having artists validate Dolby Atmos mixes directly from Mercedes vehicles. With Crafted in a Mercedes, that idea evolves from playback to creation, turning mobility into an extension of the studio itself.
The concept was unveiled at Interscope Studios in Los Angeles, where acclaimed producers Finneas and Aron Forbes put the system through its paces.
“A lot of people experience music in their cars - so being able to create and edit music in this space was a fun challenge and highly satisfying to do,” said Finneas. “The Mercedes-Benz sound system is so precise, and the setup so intuitive, it’s exciting to be able produce music with different listening experiences in mind.”
The future of rolling creativity?
Markus Schafer, Mercedes-Benz’s Chief Technology Officer, described Crafted in a Mercedes as “a new benchmark - not only for automotive luxury, but for how and where music can be made.”
It’s a bold fusion of art and engineering that fits neatly into Mercedes-Benz’s wider ambition to redefine mobility through software, design and sensory experience. As luxury cars increasingly double as offices, lounges, and now studios, the question isn’t just where you drive - it’s what you create on the way there.
