  • MG Motor New Zealand has revealed more details about the U9 double cab ute that will launch here soon.
  • Top spec U9's will get an electric tailgate and an optional folding rear hatch that will extend the tray into the cabin.
  • The U9 will be powered by a 160kW/520Nm 2.5-litre turbo diesel engine with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

MG Motor New Zealand has revealed more specification details for the upcoming U9 double cab ute.

The MG U9 is powered by a 160kW/520Nm 2.5-litre turbo diesel engine hooked up to a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission and a BorgWarner Super Select 4WD system, with electronic-controlled locking differentials on both axles.

The MG U9 will boast a full 3500kg braked towing capacity and between 779 and 879kg payload.

Unlike its LDV cousin, the Terron 9, that uses leaf springs at the rear, the U9 packs rear multi-link independent suspension to offer both enhanced handling and ride comfort, while still offering between 779 and 879kg payload in the tray and a full 3500kg braked towing capabilities. The LDV offers 1100kg payload with the same towing capacity.

Other features unique to the U9 over its LDV sibling include a clever folding electric tailgate that unfurls a drop down step at the touch of a button, allowing for safe, practical access to the rear tub, while an optional electronic retractable rear panel called a Smart Hatch can link the cabin to the tub, with rear seats that fold flat to create flexible load space that runs from inside the cabin through to the tray.

The Smart Hatch and folding rear seats enable you to fit long loads. Or just spend some quality time with your dog.

Both the electric tailgate and optional Smart Hatch are only available on the top-sped Explore Pro model.

The mid-spec Explore X and top-spec Explore Pro will feature heated seats, with the Pro adding driver’s seat ventilation and a massage function, as well as heated rear side seats. A 12.3-inch digital cluster and 12.3-inch central control touchscreen are standard across the entire range.

"Kiwis no longer have to choose between performance and refinement as the MG U9 really delivers the goods on all fronts," said MG Motor New Zealand country business manager Dean Sheed.

The U9 packs a 160kW/520Nm 2.5-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, putting it at the more powerful end of the ute segment.

"I am proud to introduce the innovative features our team has worked to create for the MG U9. The Ute market is essential to the Kiwi way of life, and we continue to redefine the capability and comfort that New Zealand drivers deserve from their vehicles.

"From the outset of MG’s journey, we have not shied away from pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the modern car, and the MG U9 is no different. We know people will be surprised for all the right reasons when they experience the capability and comfort of the MG U9."

The U9 is set to go on sale shortly, with MG Motor "encouraging pre-orders" by offering a $1000 MG Genuine accessory pack offer for the first 100 customers. The U9 will be available in New Zealand in three variants; the $60,990 entry level Explore mode, the $63,990 Explore X and the $68,990 Explore Pro.
