  • Polestar will integrate Google's new Live Lane guidance into the Polestar 4.
  • The system uses AI to detect which lanes the car should be in for upcoming navigation prompts.
  • The Polestar 4 will be the first car from an OEM to use the new system.

Polestar is set to become the first automotive OEM to integrate Google Maps’ new live lane guidance directly into a vehicle's driver display. This feature, intended for cars equipped with Google built-in, is designed to help drivers maintain their course while navigating complex highways and during periods of heavy rush-hour traffic.

The company says the new navigation experience will be presented directly on the 10.2-inch driver display in the Polestar 4. The guidance system detects the vehicle's lane by employing Google’s advanced AI, which analyses road elements such as lane markings and road signs captured by one of the forward-facing cameras on the Polestar 4.

The Polestar 4 will become the first car to use Google Maps' new live land guidance.

"Polestar has been a close partner since 2020 when Polestar 2 launched as the first car with Google built-in. Now, Polestar 4 will be the first to integrate our ground-breaking live lane guidance which will help people drive with even more confidence and set a new benchmark for navigation across the auto industry." said Andrew Foster, Director of Product Management for Google Maps.

The system works in conjunction with Google Maps navigation capabilities, providing drivers with visual and audio reminders intended to help with timely lane changes. The visualisation highlights all possible lanes relevant to the chosen route, specifically indicating which lane the car is currently in.

The system will highlight all the possible lanes available to prepare for the next navigation prompt.

According to Sid Odedra, Head of UI/UX at Polestar, the live lane guidance "supports Polestar’s driver-centric user experience strategy", aiming to reduce driver stress and potentially improve safety by lessening concerns over missed exits or necessary last-minute lane adjustments.

Polestar says the highway-focused integration is part of its commitment to continuously upgrade its vehicles using innovative features delivered through over-the-air updates. The rollout is expected in the coming months, with initial availability being limited to Polestar 4 vehicles in the US and Sweden. The company says it plans for expansion into additional markets, road types, and for more customers in the future.
