The world’s bestseller gets a radical rethink.

  • Toyota unveiled a new Corolla concept at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, signalling a major design and tech overhaul.
  • The concept features sharp EV-inspired styling, a minimalist interior and multiple powertrain options including hybrid and fully electric.
  • Developed by Toyota’s design studio in Nice, the model previews a 2026 successor to the current Corolla.

Toyota’s gone and done it. The brand's new Corolla concept, revealed at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, looks almost nothing like the commuter classic we’ve known for decades.

Penned by Toyota’s European design team in Nice, the car is said to preview the next-generation Corolla, expected to debut around 2026.

The shape of things to come

From the front, it’s clear this Corolla means business. The familiar grille has vanished, replaced by a thin air intake below the bumper and a clean face framed by full-width LED headlights, part of Toyota’s new “hammerhead” design language.

Crisp lines, sculpted panels and a descending window line give the car an almost EV-like presence, hinting at the brand’s growing electrification strategy.

Out back, a subtle ducktail spoiler and pixel-style taillights stretch across the boot lid, spelling out “Corolla” in bold lettering. Toyota hasn’t released full dimensions or drivetrain specs yet, but the concept’s stance and detailing suggest production intent rather than mere showpiece fantasy.

Cabin fever, but make it futuristic

Inside, the overhaul continues. Gone is the clutter, as Toyota’s design team has embraced a minimalist approach. The dash features compact digital displays for both driver and passenger, while a floating centre console houses a shifter shaped after the car’s silhouette.

Ambient lighting and sculpted seats give the cabin a calm, futuristic air, with most controls condensed into the steering wheel and flanking the instrument cluster.

Power to the people

Toyota confirms the new-generation Corolla will continue its “multi-pathway” approach, offering several powertrains to suit global markets. Expect hybrid and fully electric versions, though the brand remains tight-lipped on outputs, battery size, and range.

Whatever’s under the bonnet, Toyota insists there’ll be no compromise on practicality or interior space.

Alongside the Corolla, Toyota also rolled out an assortment of playful mobility concepts, everything from kids’ pods to off-road wheelchairs and the latest HiAce prototypes, showcasing a more experimental, inclusive direction for the brand.

If this concept is anything to go by, the humble Corolla could be about to shed its sensible shoes and stride into a sleeker, smarter era.
