BMW is getting its new battery operation in Woodruff, South Carolina, ready to supply the electric iX5, with series production scheduled to begin in December 2026.
The facility is a significant manufacturing operation in its own right. More than 300 people will work alongside around 250 robots to assemble high-voltage batteries for the forthcoming model.
Woodruff prepares for December start
Rather than revisiting the wider iX5 reveal, the latest update provides a closer look at how BMW plans to produce one of the vehicle's most important components. The Woodruff plant will assemble the company's sixth-generation, or Gen6, battery systems using cylindrical cells and a cell-to-pack process.
Under that method, the cells are integrated directly into the battery housing. It is a more direct approach than building them into separate modules first, making the production process itself a key part of BMW's next electric-vehicle push.
Digital tools shape the production line
BMW has leaned heavily on digital technology while preparing Woodruff. Digital twins, virtual reality and artificial intelligence have been used across planning, employee training and quality control.
The company says Gen6 battery production reduces CO2e emissions per watt-hour by 28% compared with its Gen5 process. Normal operations at the plant are also designed to run without fossil fuels.
Those details put the focus squarely on industrial readiness: people, robots and digital systems working together ahead of the December start date. For BMW, Woodruff is not simply a supply point for the iX5, but an early demonstration of how its next battery generation will be built at scale.
BMW has not disclosed New Zealand launch timing or pricing for the electric iX5 in this production update.
