Mazda New Zealand is continuing what seems to be a mission to align the specification names of its various model ranges with an update to the evergreen (and now available in a new shade of actual green) MX-5 sports car.
The previous Roadster GT has been replaced by the $61,990 Roadster Takami, which remains the most driver-focused MX-5 in the lineup. It carries a similar equipment level, including a Track mode for the dynamic stability control, 17-inch forged BBS wheels, red Brembo brake calipers and Bilstein dampers.
However, it also adds new Recaro sports seats trimmed in leather and Alcantara.
Mazda NZ has also introduced a new entry-level $51,990 MX-5 called Roadster SP. It says the model was "created to provide an accessible and affordable entry point into open-top motoring". It wears 17-inch black metallic alloy wheels to complement the black fabric roof, while the cabin features cloth-trimmed sports seats.
Both Takami and SP are manual-transmission only and feature Mazda's Asymmetric Limited Slip Differential, which varies the limiting force applied to the differential in response to acceleration, deceleration and changes in rear-wheel vertical load.
The updated RF Homura ($61,990, same price as the Roadster Takami) comes exclusively with a 6-speed automatic transmission. In addition to the folding hard-top it features heated leather seats and an upgraded Bose audio system.
All MX-5s are still powered by a 2.0-litre, 135kW/205Nm naturally aspirated engine.
The green machine
A new Zinc Green Metallic colour makes its debut on the MX-5. The company says it takes its inspiration from the colour and texture of zinc chromate primer, an undercoat used to enhance the durability of industrial products. The colour formulation incorporates bluish metallic flakes.
A safer sports car
Lane Keep Assist (LKA) is now standard across the MX-5 range, an upgrade from the previous lane departure warning system. The Smart City Brake System (SCBS) has been enhanced with pedestrian and cyclist detection.
Inside, the centre display gains touchscreen functionality.
The updated Mazda MX-5 range is expected to arrive in New Zealand from October 2026.
