- New hot hatch for 2027 revealed in concept form.
- Pays homage to MG's past, but with cutting-edge tech.
- MG also plans a new luxury SUV, revealed as the Cyber concept.
MG used the Goodwood Festival of Speed (July 9-12) to spruik a new hot hatch it plans to launch in 2027: the Go!, which aims to combine the latest EV technology with design cues from classic models like MGB GT.
While MG already has a very quick hatchback in the form of the MG4 XPower, Go! is something more substantial: a bespoke hot hatch, rather than merely a go-fast version of a family car.
Officially a concept at this stage, MG says of Go!: [It's] "a promise of bringing genuine aspiration and desirability to the electric mainstream. It has a clever mix of retro futuristic design inspired by MG’s most elegant and expressive models from the mid-20th century, like the iconic MGB GT."
Potential rivals for the MG might include the pure-electric Mini JCW and (especially) the new Renault 5, a baby-EV that's not currently sold in New Zealand but is going gangbusters in Europe and the UK.
MG says the Go! concept, along with the forthcoming production model, is designed "entirely by the team at MG Design Centre in London, led by design director, Carl Gotham."
The company says Go! is intended to be a contemporary nod to sporting MGs that have come before, from the MGB GT to MG Metro Turbo, MG ZR and MG EX4: "It is both a statement for today and a small indication of where MG can go next."
"It is not about looking back for its own sake, but about capturing some of the clarity, charm and emotional appeal that have always made MG so distinctive, and reinterpreting that in a way that feels relevant today and crucially creating something with strong charisma,” says Gotham.
Alongside Go!, MG also revealed a concept that could represent a future flagship for the brand, the Cyber. Also created by Gotham and the UK Design Centre team, the Cyber is a large SUV (D-segment in car industry speak).
MG says Cyber "seeks to unite everyday usability with genuine driving enjoyment, creating a vehicle equally suited to urban environments, long distance journeys and engaging roads."
