  • High-performance GLC steps back to a 6-cylinder engine.
  • Fully variable AWD, rear-axle steering standard.
  • 0-100km/h in 4.2 seconds, 600Nm with 40Nm overboost on tap.

Mercedes-AMG has launched the GLC 53 in New Zealand, with an inline-six-cylinder engine making 330kW/600Nm.

As before, new model comes in SUV (front) and coupe-style (rear) versions.

Sorry, we should say the AMG GLC has gone back to a six-cylinder engine, because the new GLC 53 effectively replaces the previous GLC 43 and GLC 63, both of which were powered by a 4-cylinder engine (mild hybrid in the 43, plug-in for the 63).

Mercedes-AMG has acknowledged that those AMG-specific 4-cylinder powertrains, technology triumphs though they were, have failed to resonate with many of its traditional customers. So it's back to a six for the GLC.

The new model features a 3.0-litre inline-6, with an electric auxiliary supercharger for improved torque at low revs. The peak 330kW/600Nm can be boosted by 40Nm for a maximum of 10 seconds. The SUV can hit 100km/h in 4.2 seconds.

Option packs include Performance Ergonomic enhancements for the cabin.

The previous GLC 43 made 310kW/500Nm, while the 63 produced a monstrous 500kW/1020Nm. The true replacement for the latter model will likely be a pure-electric AMG, based on the platform of the new GLC 400 and producing even more power than the previous 63.

The new GLC 53's AMG Speedshift TCT 9G transmission supports "rapid shift times, quick reactions, double-declutching function and multiple downshifts," says the company.

AMG Ride Control and 4-wheel steering are standard.

Power is delivered through AMG Performance 4Matic+ fully variable all-wheel drive, while AMG Ride Control  suspension and rear-axle steering are standard.

There's a dedicated AMG exhaust system. Special resonators amplify the sound, with "characteristic crackling on throttle lift-off, AMG-typical late ignition and a deep exhaust note".

AMG Real Performance Sound is included as standard in the New Zealand specification, allowing drivers to further tailor the soundtrack.

Twenty one-inch AMG cross-spoke forged wheels finished in matt black with a high-sheen rim flange are paired with Night Package and Night Package II, featuring dark chrome AMG badging and grille elements.

Inside, there's metal structure trim, heated front leather sport seats with memory function and four-way lumbar support, a panoramic sliding sunroof, head-up display and a Burmester 3D surround sound system.

GLC 53 option packs: Dynamic, Ergonomic and Plus

The AMG Dynamic Plus Package is available as an option. It includes an electronic rear-axle locking differential, AMG dynamic engine mounts and the Race driving programme, sharpening both agility and driver engagement.

Drift Mode is a first for an AMG SUV (for "closed-circuit use") says the company, while red-painted AMG brake callipers and an AMG fuel filler cap add further visual accents.

Also optional, the Performance Ergonomic Package features an AMG Performance steering wheel in Nappa leather and Microcut microfibre, AMG Track Pace for performance data recording and analysis, and AMG Performance and Multicontour front seats.

The Plus Package adds Driving Assistance Plus, with an expanded suite of intelligent safety and assistance systems such as Active Steering Assist and Evasive Steering Assist with Bicycle, Pedestrian and Vehicle Detection, as well as MBUX Augmented Reality for Navigation, which overlays directional guidance onto live camera images.

The standard heat insulating dark-tinted glass is upgraded to heat- and noise-insulating acoustic glass.

How much is the new Mercedes-AMG GLC 53 in NZ?

The GLC 53 is priced at $158,400 for the SUV and $162,500 for the lower-roof coupe version. The Dynamic Plus Package adds $3700, the Performance Ergonomic Package $5800 and the Plus Package $5500.

The new model is available to order in NZ now.
