Smart previews a new two-seater EV.

Smart previews a new two-seater EV.

  • Concept #2 previews electric two-seater with ~300km range and fast charging.
  • Compact design measures 2.79m with tight 6.95m turning circle.
  • New #6 EHD fastback claims up to 1,810km range with hybrid system.

Smart is going back to its roots, but with a very different approach.

At its recent global brand event in Beijing, the company unveiled the Concept #2, a compact electric two-seater designed to reinvent the original fortwo formula for a new era.

It’s not just a nostalgic nod, either. The concept previews a production model due later this year, as Smart pushes to grow its lineup from three to five models globally.

Back to the city, but with style

The Concept #2 sticks to what made Smart famous: small footprint, big usability.

Measuring just 2.79 metres long, it uses a “wheels-at-the-corners” layout to maximise cabin space, while a tight 6.95-metre turning circle keeps it properly city-friendly.

Design, however, takes a more expressive turn. Styled by the Mercedes-Benz global design team, the car follows a “function becomes fashion” philosophy, pairing clean proportions with bold finishes, translucent details and premium touches.

As design boss Kai Sieber puts it: “We believe a city car should be more than a problem solver, it should spark joy.”

Electric underpinnings, modern expectations

Underneath sits Smart’s new Electric Compact Architecture (ECA), developed specifically for small EVs.

The concept points to a driving range of close to 300km, along with DC fast charging capable of taking the battery from 10 to 80% in under 20 minutes.

There’s also vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, allowing the car to power external devices, something increasingly expected in this segment.

The production version is scheduled to debut at the Paris Motor Show in October 2026, effectively marking the return of the fortwo idea in electric form.

Meanwhile, something much bigger

At the other end of the scale, Smart also revealed its first premium fastback sedan: the #6 EHD.

Unlike the compact #2, this model targets space and long-distance capability, offering an 86% space efficiency rating and a 525-litre boot.

Inside, dual 13-inch OLED displays sit within a minimalist dashboard, reinforcing the brand’s push into more premium territory.

The headline figure is range. Using an Electric Hybrid Drive setup, the #6 EHD claims up to 1810km (CLTC), alongside fuel consumption as low as 3.9L/100km.

Smarter change

Taken together, the two cars show how far Smart has shifted.

The Concept #2 revisits the brand’s original purpose of compact, urban mobility, while the #6 EHD stretches it into entirely new territory.

Different ends of the spectrum, same message: Smart is no longer just about being small.
