Mini has previewed a tougher addition to the Countryman family by sending a specially engineered development vehicle into the Rocky Mountains.
High country, low grip
The camouflaged Countryman was driven over gravel, rocky ground and remote routes, giving the project a stern outing far from smooth sealed roads.
Altitude, loose surfaces and unpredictable weather added to the challenge as Mini put its all-road capability to work.
The exercise offers the clearest indication yet of the direction Mini is taking with its coming rugged Countryman special edition.
However, there is an important distinction: the vehicle pictured undertaking the Rocky Mountains run is a development car and is not being offered for sale.
October unveiling confirmed
Mini has confirmed the new special edition will make its world premiere in October 2026. Beyond describing it as a rugged addition to the Countryman range, the company has not yet disclosed further details.
That means its powertrain, equipment, price and market availability remain unknown.
Jean-Philippe Parain said Mini was “one step away from introducing this new, rugged addition to the Mini Countryman family”.
He said the project was guided from the outset by Mini’s focus on turning journeys into adventures.
The Rocky Mountains outing nevertheless makes the project’s intent clear. Mini chose gravel, rocky and remote routes to put the development vehicle into difficult conditions beyond sealed roads.
For now, the run is evidence of development work rather than a promise about the eventual showroom model’s specification. The production edition’s powertrain, equipment and availability will need to wait until Mini shares further details.
