  • Toyota New Zealand has revealed local pricing for the all-electric Hilux.
  • Prices start from $79,990 for the double cab chassis SR model and top out at $85,990 for the SR5 wellside.
  • ICE and hybrid diesel remain the dominant powertrains across the new Hilux range.

Toyota New Zealand has officially launched its first-ever fully electric Hilux alongside the new-generation diesel and hybrid models, revealing pricing for the three variants in the all-electric range.

Toyota New Zealand has confirmed that the Hilux BEV will start at a "Toyota Driveaway Price" of $79,990 for the Hilux BEV SR Double Cab Chassis (that does not include a tray in the price), while the Hilux BEV SR Double Cab ute will land at $81,990 and the SR5 Double Cab will top the range at $85,990.

The Toyota Hilux BEV will start at $79,990 for the SR Cab Chassis, rising to $85,990 for the SR5 wellside seen here.

This prices the all-electric Hilux considerably cheaper than in Australia, where it starts at the NZ-equivalent of $90,000 before rising to NZ$99,000 for the SR5.

All BEV variants come standard with an All-Wheel-Drive system powered by dual electric motors that produce a combined 144kW, and will be available in two exterior colours - Glacier White and Ash (grey).

The Hilux BEV joins diesel and diesel hybrid powertrains in the Hilux's local line up.

Toyota says the Hilux BEV is "designed for roles that allow for overnight charging at a home base or depot", largely because of its relatively meagre maximum range of 315km (based on NEDC data, which is considerably more generous than WLTP), and features a braked towing capacity of 2000 kg and an unbraked capacity of 750 kg.

In terms of safety, the 5-Star ANCAP safety rating originally awarded to the diesel models has now been formally extended to the battery-electric variants.

"Hilux has been a core nameplate within the line-up for 50 years, which is a milestone in itself," said Toyota New Zealand Chief Strategic Officer, Andrew Davis.

The Hilux BEV is considerably cheaper in New Zealand than it is in Australia where it starts at the equivalent of NZ$90,000.

"Launching the new generation, across diesel, hybrid, and full battery electric variants at the same time makes it even bigger. We have also extensively driven the BEV version on the same tracks as the diesel ute and it holds its own, both on and off-road. It’s got the tough go anywhere DNA of a Hilux."

While the all-electric powertrain is a new addition, Davis says diesel and hybrid will remain central to the Hilux range.

"For customers working in remote areas where recharging isn't practical, diesel is still the right answer," he said. As such, the new Hilux range continues with an unchanged 2.8-litre diesel four-cylinder engine in both standard and hybrid forms, while Davis says the significant changes for the 2026 generation are to the exterior style, interior design, ride quality and passenger comfort.

Toyota says the BEV models feature broadly the same specification and standard equipment as their diesel counterparts.

All models, including the BEVs have seen chassis and suspension improvements, with the independent front suspension and leaf-spring rear axle being retuned, with consideration made for likely use cases across the range -  working SR grades stay firm for carrying heavy loads while higher grades adopt a more comfortable ride.

Toyota says the new Hilux features better ride control when unladen, with reduced rear-end bounce on uneven terrain and improved composure on gravel and corrugated roads, as well as improved stability when moving between sealed and unsealed surfaces.

Likewise, a switch to electric power steering makes low-speed steering noticeably lighter, while at highway speeds it remains stable and predictable.

Toyota says that diesel and diesel hybrid remain central to the Hilux range in New Zealand.

To accommodate the electric powertrain, the BEV models feature their own suspension system with frame reinforcements, strengthened MacPherson strut front suspension and a De-dion rear leaf spring setup which accommodates the rear electric motor, while retaining a live axle setup for off-roading.

The new Hilux range starts at $49,990 for the SR Double Cab diesel 2WD, rising to $63,990 for the diesel range-topping Adventure Hybrid Double Cab 4WD, topping out at the BEV SR5 Double Cab AWD at $85,990. Full range pricing is as follows:
