Jaguar says this is "the biggest moment since the Jaguar name was born in 1935": the reveal of the finished Type 01 super-luxury EV.
You can make up your own mind about that, but the British maker is certainly looking to make a big impression with its pure-electric reboot. It was launched in New York with large-scale displays in Times Square, the trendy Dumbo (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) district and the Lower East Side.
The car was driven on closed roads to a high-profile arrival at the Storied event centre in West Chelsea, zip code 10001. You can see what they did there.
Jaguar describes the Type 01's proportions as "exuberant" and says it's the most aerodynamic and powerful Jaguar road car of all time, while aiming to retain visual links to classic models.
“From its dramatic design to its captivating drive, Type 01 distils the essence of Jaguar into a luxury grand tourer for a new era," says Jaguar managing director Rawdon Glover. "Type 01 is the foundation of this British brand, one that makes no compromise between design and engineering in our quest to create objects of desire, just as it was in the days of the E-type and XJS.”
The bespoke Jaguar Electric Architecture (different to the platform used for the new electric Range Rovers) is powered by an 850-volt electrical system, with 724km range (WLTP). It makes "more than 1000ps" (735kW) says the company.
At Storied in New York, Jaguar announced actor Florence Pugh as the "inaugural brand ambassador for its new era".
New Zealand orders open early 2027, with first client deliveries expected in the second half of the year. Pricing is yet to be announced.
