Mazda turns CX-5 trim into shoes.

Mazda turns CX-5 trim into shoes.

  • Mazda partnered with Hiroshima-based Spingle on SP-MZD driving shoes.
  • Buyers can choose Sport Tan/Black or all-black colourways.
  • The Japan-only shoes are priced at ¥26,500 (roughly NZ$280) per pair.

Mazda has found a new way to stretch the CX-5’s Sport Tan cabin theme beyond the driver’s seat: turn it into footwear.

The Japanese brand has partnered with Hiroshima sneaker maker Spingle on a new pair of SP-MZD driving shoes, available exclusively in Japan. It is a niche move, yes, but not entirely random. Mazda and Spingle both call Hiroshima home, and the project gives brand devotees a way to wear a little Mazda without committing to a jacket covered in logos.

Two versions of the SP-MZD are available: Sport Tan/Black and a more discreet all-black finish.

The headline pair uses kangaroo leather in the same Sport Tan shade found in the new Mazda CX-5’s interior, paired with suede for flexibility.

That makes the shoes more than a simple merchandise exercise, at least in concept. The material and colour choices are directly tied to Mazda’s latest cabin design, while the low-profile form is intended to suit driving.

Mazda says the project took two years to develop with Spingle. Teams from both companies reportedly visited each other’s factories during the process, with every pair produced in Hiroshima.

The shoes follow last year’s SP-MX5 driving shoe, which used a brighter colour spread including red, white and blue. By comparison, the SP-MZD is far more restrained, which should make it easier to wear without looking as though you are on your way to a car club concours.

Seven unisex sizes are offered, and each pair comes in a special box featuring a sketch of the shoe.

Price and availability

In Japan, the Mazda SP-MZD shoes are priced at ¥26,500, which is about NZ$280. They are sold through Mazda’s and Spingle’s online stores, along with 14 Spingle retail locations across Japan.

Mazda has not disclosed availability outside Japan yet, and a wider rollout appears unlikely for now.

Car-branded footwear has become a small but persistent corner of enthusiast culture, with brands such as Porsche and BMW also using sneaker collaborations to stretch their identities beyond the showroom. Mazda’s take is more understated than most, which feels about right. After all, if you are going to match your shoes to a CX-5 interior, doing it quietly is probably the best possible outcome.
