Three electric variants lead launch

Three electric variants lead launch

  • The electric launch range spans three variants, with hybrid versions planned to follow later.
  • Mercedes-Benz quotes up to 657km of WLTP range and rapid 800-volt charging.
  • A longer wheelbase, lower body and 107-litre front compartment reshape the GLA's packaging.

Mercedes-Benz has detailed its new GLA, with electric power taking centre stage at launch.

The initial line-up comprises the GLA 200, GLA 250+ and all-wheel-drive GLA 350 4Matic, while hybrid variants are planned to follow later.

The headline range figure is up to 657km on the WLTP cycle.

An 800-volt electrical architecture also underpins the new model, enabling it to add up to 270km of WLTP range in 10 minutes under suitable conditions.

Together, those figures put range and charging speed at the heart of the GLA's pitch.

Mercedes-Benz has not disclosed New Zealand launch timing, local specifications or pricing, so it is too early to know which variants could be offered here.

Longer wheelbase, lower body

The change goes beyond the powertrain.

Mercedes-Benz has stretched the wheelbase by 61mm while lowering the body by 20mm compared with the previous GLA.

There is also a new 107-litre front luggage compartment. That gives the electric GLA a second storage area in addition to its main luggage space, adding a practical dimension to the revised packaging.

The longer wheelbase and lower body make for an interesting combination: the GLA grows between the axles while trimming its overall height. Mercedes-Benz's confirmed dimensions show that the new generation is not simply an electric drivetrain fitted beneath the old shape.

Superscreen inside, towing muscle outside

Inside, the GLA introduces an MBUX Superscreen layout. Mercedes has not detailed a New Zealand equipment list, however, so the local display configuration remains unknown.

At the top of the electric range, the all-wheel-drive GLA 350 4Matic can tow up to 2000kg. It is a useful point of distinction for buyers who need more than commuting range from an electric vehicle, although local availability of that variant has not been confirmed.
