Volvo’s Google-built cars are getting a smarter voice.

Volvo’s Google-built cars are getting a smarter voice.

  • Google Gemini is rolling out to Volvo cars with Google built-in.
  • Eligible Volvo models dating back to 2020 will receive the software update.
  • The initial rollout covers US customers with active internet and US English accounts.

Volvo has started rolling out Google Gemini to its cars, bringing a more conversational AI assistant to models with Google built-in.

The update begins with selected customers in the United States before expanding across the country and into more markets over the coming weeks. Volvo says drivers of eligible cars dating back to 2020 will be among the first to receive Google’s next-generation in-car assistant.

Talk to the car, not at it

Gemini replaces the old-school “say the exact command and hope for the best” routine with more natural, intent-based conversation. In simple terms, the car should better understand context, follow-up questions and slightly messy human requests.

Drivers can ask Gemini to help plan a trip, suggest a family holiday, or recommend activities near a destination. It can also find stops along a route using Google Maps, including more specific requests such as places selling croissants, then handle follow-ups about reviews or parking.

Messaging is also part of the upgrade. Gemini can summarise incoming texts or send more detailed replies, including translating a message into French. If plans change, the driver can amend the message without starting from scratch.

Not just Android Auto this time

This follows Google’s earlier Gemini rollout for Android Auto, but Volvo’s update is different: it applies to cars with Google built-in, where the software is integrated directly into the vehicle rather than projected from a phone.

That distinction matters. Volvo has been one of Google’s key automotive partners, and in 2025 was selected as a lead development partner for new in-car features and updates. That gives Volvo a direct role in shaping how Gemini behaves inside a real cabin, not just on a phone-linked interface.

“At Volvo Cars, we focus on developing human-centric technology that adapts to people, not the other way around,” says Alwin Bakkenes, Head of Global Software Engineering at Volvo Cars. “Bringing Google Gemini into our cars is about making everyday interactions more natural, more helpful and less distracting. It pushes the boundaries on what is possible inside a Volvo.”

Over-the-air intelligence

Volvo says Gemini will initially be available to eligible US customers with an active in-car internet connection and a US English Google Account.

The supported Google built-in model list is broad, covering the C40, EC40, EX40, XC40, S60, V60, XC60, XC90, EX90, ES90, EX30 and upcoming EX60, among others.

For Volvo, it is another over-the-air upgrade in a busy software year. The brand says it began rolling out its Volvo Car UX update to millions of customers globally in March 2026.

For drivers, the promise is simple: fewer rigid commands, more useful answers, and a car that might finally understand what you meant the first time.
